WebJul 31, 2012 · If you are making a 10' leader use 4' of 30 lb then 2' of 20 lb next come 1' each of the 15, 8 and 6 lb and finally 14-18" of the 4 lb and you're done. You can use the Maxima formula by making a given amount of butt section then 20% of that amount would be the mid section followed by 1' of the 6 lb and the 14-18" of 4 lb. If all you do is add 10lb. tippet to the leader, you’ll have a lot of problems with the fly actually launching out. So, add 30-40lb.
