I guess people thought it made them look more manly or something and it picked up in the 50's. Nowadays I guess people do it for the oral fixation or just to look tough...idk really. WebI’ve generally always kept something in my mouth to chew on since middle school. Toothpicks and guitar picks were always my go to items.
